Akshay Kumar
Akshay Kumar, born Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia on September 9, 1967 is an Indian film actor. He has appeared in over 80 Hindi films.
During the 90s, Kumar was primarily described as the action hero of Bollywood, starring in hit action films such as Khiladi (1992), Mohra (1994) and Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995), and being particularly known for his “Khiladi Series”. However, he was also recognised for his performances in romantic films like Yeh Dillagi (1994) and Dhadkan (2000) as well as dramatic films such as Ek Rishtaa (2001).
In 2002, he won his first Filmfare Award in the Best Villain category, for his performance in Ajnabee (2001). Willing to change his intransigent image, Kumar later ventured mostly into comedy films. His comic performances in films such as Hera Pheri (2000), Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004), Garam Masala (2005) and Jaan-E-Mann (2006) met with critical acclaim. His success further rose in 2007, when he starred in four consecutive commercial hits. Having done so, he has established himself as one of the prominent actors of the Hindi film industry. In 2008, the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Law on Kumar in recognition of his contribution to Indian cinema. In 2009, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India.
Early life
Kumar was born in Amritsar (Punjab) to a Punjabi family. His father was a government worker. From a very young age, he was recognised as a performer, particularly as a dancer. Kumar was raised in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk neighbourhood before moving to Mumbai. In Mumbai, he lived in Koliwada, which was another Punjabi dominated area. He studied at Don Bosco School and then Khalsa College, where he took an interest in sports.
He studied martial arts in Bangkok and worked as a chef. He then came back to Mumbai, where he started teaching martial arts. One of his students happened to be a photographer and recommended him to do modelling. The student gave him a modelling assignment for a small company. For his two hours posing in front of the camera, he got Rs. 5,000, compared to his previous salary of Rs. 4,000 in one month. That was one of the main reasons why he chose to be a model. After a couple of months of modelling, Kumar was finally offered a lead role by producer Pramod Chakravarthy for the movie Deedar.
Career
Kumar made his Bollywood acting debut with the 1991 film Saugandh, which was unnoticed. His first major success was the 1992 thriller film Khiladi. 1993 saw a drop as many of his films failed to do well. However, 1994 proved to be a good year for Kumar as he followed up his success with Khiladi with the action films Main Khiladi Tu Anari and Mohra which were among the highest grossing films of the year. Later that year, Yash Chopra signed him for the romantic film Yeh Dillagi which was also a success. He received appreciation for his performance in this film, where he played a romantic role which was different compared to his action roles. He would consequently receive his first nominations for Best Actor award at the Filmfare and Star Screen ceremonies. During the same year, Kumar also had success with films like Suhaag and the low budget action film Elaan. All these achievements, promoted Kumar as one of the most successful actors of that year.
In 1995, along with his share of unsuccessful movies, he starred in the third film in his Khiladi series Sabse Bada Khiladi, which was a hit. He proved to have success with the Khiladi series, as in the next year he starred in the fourth successful film with Khiladi in the title, Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi opposite Rekha and Raveena Tandon. The film became one of the highest grossing films of the year.
In 1997, he made an extended guest appearance in Yash Chopra’s hit film Dil To Pagal Hai, for which he received a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award nomination. In the same year, he attempted a comedy role with the fifth film in the Khiladi series, Mr and Mrs Khiladi. Unlike his previous films with Khiladi in the title, the film failed commercially. In the same way as this film, his next Khiladi releases in the following years went on to fail at the box office. In 1999, Kumar received critical acclaim for his roles in the films Sangharsh and Jaanwar. Whilst the former did not make a profit at the box office, the latter turned out to be a success.
In 2000 he starred in the comedy Hera Pheri (2000) which was both a critical and commercial success, and showcased his ability at doing comedy just as he did action and romantic roles. He also starred in the romantic film Dhadkan later that same year which also earned reasonable takings at the box office. In 2001, Kumar played a negative role in the film Ajnabee. The film won him much acclaim as well as his first Filmfare Award for Best Villain. Kumar also had critical appreciation for his role as a blind man in Aankhen which was a box office success of that year.
Following the success of Hera Pheri, Kumar starred in a number of comedy films, including Awara Paagal Deewana (2002), Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004) and Garam Masala (2005). The films succeeded at the box office, and his performance in the latter earned him his second Filmfare Award, for Best Comedian.
Apart from his action, comedy and romantic roles, Kumar displayed a flair for dramatic roles in films such as Ek Rishtaa (2001), Aankhen (2002), Bewafaa (2005) and Waqt: The Race Against Time (2005).
In 2006 he starred in a sequel to Hera Pheri titled Phir Hera Pheri. As was the former, the sequel became a huge success at the box office. Later that year he starred alongside Salman Khan in the romantic musical Jaan-E-Mann. The film was a well anticipated release, and despite receiving positive reviews from critics, did not do as well as expected at the box office. Though the film under-performed, his role as a shy, lovable nerd was praised. He ended the year with the comedy Bhagam Bhag, which was a success. In that same year, he led the Heat 2006 world tour along with fellow stars Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta, Sushmita Sen and Celina Jaitley.
2007 proved to be Kumar’s most successful year during his career in the industry, and as described by box office analysts, “probably the best ever recorded by an actor, with four outright hits and no flops.” His first release, Namastey London, was critically and commercially successful, and his performance earned him a Best Actor nomination at the Filmfare. Critic Taran Adarsh wrote of his performance in the film, “he’s sure to win the hearts of millions of moviegoers with a terrific portrayal in this film.” His next two releases, Heyy Babyy and Bhool Bhulaiyaa, were box office successes as well. Kumar’s last release of the year, Welcome, did extremely well at the box office, receiving a blockbuster status and simultaneously becoming his fifth successive hit. All of Kumar’s films which released that year did well in the overseas market as well.
Kumar’s first film of 2008, Tashan, marked his comeback to the Yash Raj Films banner after 11 years. Although much anticipated by the public, the film was a critical and commercial failure. His second film, Singh Is Kinng was a huge success at the box office and broke the first-week worldwide record of Om Shanti Om, the previous highest figure. His next film was the animated film Jumbo.
In 2009, Kumar featured opposite Deepika Padukone in the Warner Bros.-Rohan Sippy production Chandni Chowk to China. Directed by Nikhil Advani, the film was a critical and commercial failure to box office.
Personal life
During his years in Bollywood, Kumar was romantically linked with several of his co-star actresses like Ayesha Jhulka, Pooja Batra, Raveena Tandon, and Shilpa Shetty. After being engaged twice to actress Twinkle Khanna, the daughter of veteran actors Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia, he finally married her on January 14, 2001. Their son named Aarav was born on September 15, 2002.
In 2007, a leading Mumbai tabloid newspaper printed a story saying that Kumar and his wife had fallen out and Kumar had moved out of his home, staying at a hotel instead. On July 26, 2007 the couple sent a legal notice to the tabloid, declaring that the rumour was false. Kumar said:
“The article is a clear representation of careless and irresponsible journalism. The freedom of press comes with responsibilities, which seems to have been put aside to give way to shock value journalism.”
An FIR was registered by the Vakola Police on April 2009 against Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna under Setion 294 of the Indian Penal Code for an act during the Lakme Fashion Week in which Twinkle unbuttoned the jeans of Akshay.

Qatar plans five outstanding solar powered stadiums for FIFA World Cup 2022
In its efforts to win the bid to host the 2022 FIFA world Cup, Qatar has announced plans to build five stadiums. In fact Qatar 2022 has even released the concept plans for the design of these proposed stadiums. Designed by Albert Speer & Partner GmbH, these proposed stadium designs display striking and dramatic looks but also incorporate state-of-the-art technology in an effort to stand out from the crowd bidding to host this popular tournament. These proposed designs were unveiled to the world at ‘Sport Accord’, the world’s largest sporting convention in Dubai.
Each one of the stadiums has either been inspired by a specific element of Qatari culture and tradition, or acts as a symbol to the rest of the world of the relationship that Qatar shares with the competing nations. What is more, the structures will make the most of solar technology to serve the power requirements. Using innovative climate control technology, temperatures within the stadiums are set to stay below 28°C, despite the nation’s fierce heat, making the 2022 FIFA World Cup the first ever cooled outdoor sporting event.
What is more, Qatar 2022 has announced that post the world cup, many modular components of the stadiums no longer needed will be dismantled and shipped to other countries in order to promote football development.
Currently, AS&P have presented designs for five football stadiums located across Qatar, two of which are adaptations of existing buildings. The proposed stadiums are as follows:
The Al Rayyan Stadium is currently situated 20km northwest of the capital, Doha. Plans are to adapt the existing building, surrounding it in a membrane-like structure onto which will be projected match updates, tournament information and other filmic material. The plans also include doubling the seating capacity.
The second adaption will be the Al Gharafa stadium situated close to the city of Doha. The facade of the existing stadium is to be transformed into a vivid explosion of color and the seating capacity will be doubled.
Al Shamal stadium will be a brand new stadium with a capacity for up to 45,120 people. Proposed to be situated in north of Qatar, the design of this stadium has been inspired by the traditional local fishing boats of the Gulf, ‘dhows’.
Al Wakrah is another brand new stadium that is more than a stadium, in fact it is proposed to be a huge sports complex complete with multi-purpose hall, themed swimming-pool, spa zone and shopping mall alongside the obvious sports facilities.
Finally, is the Al Khor stadium (another brand new one), that will boast of a seashell-inspired asymmetrical structure set in landscaped gardens and with a capacity to hold 45,330 football fans.
Besides being able to watch more than one match per day, all stadiums will be linked to the brand new metro system allowing fans to travel from one stadium to another through public transport.
Qatar will have to wait till December 2010 for FIFA will make their final decision as to which of the 11 bidding nations are to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Until then click here to view each stadium design.

Moreover, the sedan is much wider in comparison to the others, making it more comfortably spacious inside. The car will come with a plug-in hybrid or fuel cell drive propulsion for better efficiency. Forever to end soon as De Beers set to reduce diamond supply
DeBeers is synonyms with diamonds. Diamonds are rare and they are just about to get rarer, as DeBeers has announced that they would cut down on diamond mining. And they should know, considering the fact that the industry hasn’t uncovered any new sources big enough to match the DeBeers’ biggest mines in Africa or even the other big diamond miles in Alrosa, Russia.
Gareth Penny, managing director for DeBeers cites “A natural supply-demand imbalance” and Des Kilalea, analyst at RBC Capital Markets estimates prices of rough diamonds to grow by at least 5 per cent per year for the next five years.
Dubai leads in the expensive property market with the average rate of $7,000 a square meter
If you are interested in Real Estate and the effect of the economic crunch on the world real estate climate, here is the latest report from Reidin, a consultancy. Their latest report claims that in spite of the global meltdown Dubai is one of the most expensive emerging property markets today. The city ranked first among 59 cities in 34 emerging markets, with the highest average residential property prices. Reidin has based its analysis from data gathered from advertised prices and brokers and revealed that Dubai’s average rate as of February was about $7,000 a square meter.
The Colliers House Price Index report however claims that the prices have seen a year-on-year decline for the first time since records began. The lack of available finance, job insecurity among expatriates and the lack of transparency about project delays and postponements were reasons for the decline along with the changing profile of buyers. However the report states that it is still very early to make assumptions and determine a trend. Despite the declining prices, Dubai is still number one beating other nations like Moscow with average rate of $6,000 a square meter, Hong Kong with average rate of $5,400 a square meter, Beijing with an average rate of $4,500 a square meter and Tel Aviv with an average rate of $4,200 a square meter.
Looks like Dubai is all set to counter the global crisis with its Real Estate bloom.
Banknote Jewelry
With the prices of gold skyrocketing, even the opulent would be hunting for better options. And with so much colorful currency available all over the world, it would make for some fancy jewelry, if you know how to use it without tearing it. The Banknote Jewelry, as the makers suggest, is quite strong and it does not rip or fall apart easily. The banknotes are only folded and not damaged in any way: no cutting is used, nor is any glue applied. And if you decide to use currencies from countries like Australia, the polymer based notes even make the jewelry water proof.
11-year-old son of Azerbaijan’s President owns $44 million property in Dubai
11-year-old son of Azerbaijan’s President owns $44 million property in Dubai
Billionaires have always drawn the ire and wrath of critics for spoiling their children with expensive gifts. The latest billionaire doting dad to be showered with criticisms is the President of Azerbaijan who has reportedly purchased nine luxury mansions in Dubai worth millions of dollars in the name of his 11-year-old son. The lavish properties have been registered under the name of Heydar Aliyev, the son of President Aliyev, with Dubai’s Land Department. The Washington Post reported that the properties were bought in a two-week shopping spree last year for about $44 million. Besides his son, the Presidents daughters Leyla and Arzu, also appeared as the owners of Dubai properties, bringing the total value of the children’s alleged property portfolio to $75 million.
These lavish spending sprees have highlighted the recent allegations of corruption surrounding the Soviet republic. Although the nation is booming due to oil revenues up to $7 billion last year alone, most of its eight million people endure harsh poverty, and up to a million are refugees from the frozen conflict with Armenia over the enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh.
The President, whose official salary in Azerbaijan is about $228,000 a year, will surely find it hard to get away with such extravagant spending. Spokesmen at the presidential administration in Baku refused to make any comments regarding the property purchasing spree of the President.

Luxury Floating Hotel in the Air
Luxury Floating Hotel in the Air
Worldwide Aeros Corporation are co-developing with WATG a flying Hotel and speculate the behemoth cruise liner complete with staterooms, restaurants, shops, etc. will be built by 2010. Testing will begin in 18 months on a smaller test version of the Lighter Than Air Vehicle. The proposed 850-foot-long luxury liner is called Aeroscraft, and although it looks like a blimp and uses some blimp technology, Aeros company spokesman Edward Pevzner is quick to point out, “It’s NOT a blimp.” The Aeroscraft uses lifting gas like an airship, but incorporates dynamic liftoff similar to an airplane and is capable of vertical takeoff and landing like a helicopter.
Long-haul airships got a bad reputation after the Hindenburg disaster, but French designer Jean-Marie Massaud seems to think that the secret to resurrecting the flying gas bags is by turning them into luxurious floating hotels. The so-called Manned Cloud, which isn’t set to take flight until 2020, will cart 40 passengers around the world at a height of 18,000 feet.
When completed, the flying ship will have 20 bedrooms, a spa, a gym, a library, a bar, and a restaurant — all crammed into a two-story hanging glass structure that provides panoramic views of the world around you. With a top speed of 105 miles-per-hour the Manned Cloud can circle the globe in 10 days, and cross the U.S. on a single tank of fuel.
The Aeros Corporation is one of the world’s leading lighter-than-air (LTA) airship manufacturers. WATG (Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo) are a design consultant for the hospitality, leisure and entertainment industries. According to the designers, the ship will run on some sort of gas, rather than gasoline or diesel, making it a fully-green cruise-ship of the skies.
No price has been announced, but its sure to be a little steep for most. But look on the bright side, at least you’ll have the next 12 years to save up for a ticket!

10. Khuda Mere Khuda
Film: Krantiveer – The Revolution
Singers: K K, Shreya Ghoshal
A new entry this week in the form of Khuda Mere Khuda. While the rest of the album, sadly, has not clicked with the audience; this light performance from the wonderful romantic duo goes on to become a pleasant listen.
Singer: Mika Singh, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shankar Mahadevan, Sajid Khan, Arun Ingle
Despite being on it’s last leg, Mika’s bindaas number remains a favorite with the audience, perhaps a success it owes partially to the parent track from the yesteryear blockbuster Laawaris?!
Singers: Vijay Prakash, Mustafa Kutoane, Keerthi Sagathia
This one clearly carries the A R Rahman stamp! Whilst situational (and no doubt impressive on screen) Behene De is a delightful combination of the maestro’s music and some excellent voices.
Music: Pritam
As melodious as it is foot-tapping, and beautifully crooned by Chauhan. Unexpectedly romantic in an album which belongs to a world of dirty politics …
Singers: Shafqat Amanat Ali, Sunidhi Chauhan
Despite coming from completely different composers, Bin Tere vaguely reminds us of the monster hit, Noor-E-Khuda. Maybe that’s why we love it so much?
Singers: Chinmaye, Kshitij Tarey
Music: Mithoon
A new entry this week with the come back of Mithoon – composer of Anwar and Bas Ek Pal. Madno is a beatifully soothing track that keeps orchestration at a minimum to further highlight the pleasant melody and great vocals. This song makes an impact that won’t be forgotten quickly!
Singers: Vishal Dadlani
A track that is light on the ears and well-sung by Dadlani. It has quickly become popular with music fans despite it’s relative lack of lyrical depth as such.
Singers: Rekha Bhardwaj, Javed Ali, Anuradha Sriram
We aim to please! Khilli Re is swapped for the popular Ranjha Ranjha of the same album. A folksy based song reminiscent of the magnificence that was Taal, Ranjha is an energetic and exciting listen.
One more evicted from Desh Ki Awaaz
One more evicted from Desh Ki Awaaz
This week’s elimination is going to be looked upon as not only a shocker but also a heart breaker for many fans.
Shashi Suman the zealous singer from Patna, who left his household to chase his singing dream and even spent his initial nights in Mumbai at railway stations, had to finally bid adieu from Sony Entertainment television’s Indian Idol 5 this week.
A Little Birdie informed us that, “Two versatile singers Sashi Suman and Shivam Pathak were in the bottom two this week but due to low audience vote counts the former got evicted this week.”
Our source also adds that, “Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor had come on the show for the promotion of their upcoming movie ‘I Hate Luv stories‘ and their episode would be aired on Monday. And Tuesday’s episode would witness the star cast of movie ‘Lamha’.”
Angelina as Draupadi?
Angelina as Draupadi?
After the success of Raajneeti, Prakash Jha is already toying with a concept for his next movie, which will be marketed overseas, to an international audience.
For a long while now, Prakash has been mulling over a film focusing on the story of Draupadi aka Paanchali, the wife of the five Pandavas in the Hindu mythological epic, Mahabharata. His initial choice for the role was Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit, but since his extend to a world wide market for this venture, he would like to get an international cast. In particular, he would like to see Angelina Jolie in the role of Draupadi.
Should Angelina accept the role, she will inevitably be competing against Bipasha Basu, who also plays the same mythological female protagonist in Rituparno Ghosh’s upcoming film.
Jha sure has his ways to experiment – from having Brit accented tinsel town babe Katrina play a fluent Hindi speaking political character, to a complete outsider essay a pivotal role from the sacred texts of the Hindus – he insists of playing the surprise element card!
Daredevil Kareena’s Golmaal
Daredevil Kareena’s Golmaal
Move over Khiladi Kumar, there’s a new daredevil in town! The lovely Bebo surprised her cast and crew when she insisted on doing her own stunts for the opening sequence of Golmaal 3.
While the female counterparts of B-town are known to step up to the challenge occasionally, they do try to avoid the more riskier stunts. Kareena, however, showed unusual enthusiasm about standing over the bonnet of a moving car.
Despite being harnessed, it was a difficult shot as the actress had to keep her balance whilst maintaining the appropriate facial expressions of her character at the same time. The car (driven by director Rohit Shetty) was also going at a considerable speed and taking turns.
But we hear that the shot post completion looks amazing so maybe bravado act wasn’t plain reckless?!

The approach is as neutral as possible vis-Ã -vis the results, leaving to a new forecasting model, the MASST model, built by the authors, to produce the tendencies and behavioural paths of regional GDP and population growth in each individual European region under alternative assumptions on the competitiveness strategies of different blocks of countries. The results are accompanied by strong policy messages intended to encourage long-term strategic thinking among a wide range of actors, scientists and policy makers in response to the risks and opportunities that the European territory will face.
