2012 Ferrari Four

Red may be the iconic color for Ferrari, but not all Ferraris look good in the company’s trademark scarlet shade. Especially the flagship four-seat GTs, like the outgoing 612 Scaglietti and the 456 GT that came before it. But just about every car looks best from the front 3/4 view. So it may have stricken some as a little odd that when Ferrari unveiled the new FF, it only released three initial shots: a front view, a rear view and the side profile… all in red.

Maranello, 25 January – From today the gallery on www.ferrari.com includes a new studio shot of the FF in an elegant Grigio Ferro Met. grey. Along with this studio shot are three images which document the strenuous development testing carried out on the four-wheel-drive system over the snow-bound roads of Sweden and Finland. These depict the prototype development mule clad in camouflage used during the long-term testing of the Ferrari-patented 4RM system.

Ferrari 599 GTO

Ferrari 599 GTO

The GTO name dates back to the ’60s when Ferrari released the 250 GTO. This awesome piece of machinery was produced after FIA rules for sports car racing stipulated that at least 100 road-going examples needed to be produced before Ferrari could go racing. However, Ferrari never actually produced 100 250 GTOs, instead just 39 GTOs. Ferrari got around this by numbering the chassis’ numbers out of sequence. They also produced fake documentation of cars that did not exist. The 599 GTO design is inspired in the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano. Their presentation like concept car was appalling, and was decided that the car should be built. Although the GTO doesn’t have Ferrari official blessing, Vandenbrink designers have made a great designing work that homage to its muse, the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO.

In 1984 the successor to the 250 GTO was released called the 288 GTO. Unlike the 250 GTO before it, it was mid-engined where the 250 was front-engined. Just like the 250 the road-going version of the 288 GTO was built because the Group B Race Series said that 200 examples needed to be made, before Ferrari could go racing. Sadly, Ferrari abandoned the series before they even took part in a single race. Between 1984 and 1985 a total of 277 were manufactured including five special 288 GTO Evoluzione models.

The Ferrari 599 GTO is the third member of the GTO family. Ferrari claims that it’s the fastest road-going car they have ever produced, beating the almighty Enzo. The 599 GTO uses the same monstrous 6.0-liter V-12 engine found in the standard 599 GTB. As a result the GTO has set the fastest lap at Ferrari’s famous Fiorano racetrack with a time of 1:24. Unlike it brothers, the 250 and 288, the 599 GTO was not built because of racing stipulations. That being said, the 599 GTO is based on the track-only 599XX and can be considered as the road-going version of the XX. The GTO is actually more closely related to the XX than it is to the 599 GTB.

It pumps out around 660 horsepower at a screaming 8,250rpm and produces 457 pound-feet of torque at 6,500rpm. As a result it will rocket all 3,289 pounds from 0-60 mph in a mere 3.5 seconds and onto a top speed of over 208 mph.

Aerodynamics also play a major role in this car’s speed, producing 308 lbs of downforce at 124 mph. Ferrari implemented its Formula 1 and motorsport expertise to greatly increase downforce without impacting on drag.
